Mitras launch spoiler for the prestigious new Range Rover

Mitras Automotive (UK) Ltd is one of the leading suppliers of composite components to the automotive market. Our latest venture is a rear spoiler for the prestigious new Range Rover.

Mitras supply the spoiler directly to Land Rover in 11 Top Coat colours and fully assembled with brake lamp (CHMSL).

The spoiler is unique in that it combines a steel inner panel and a composite, sheet moulded compound, (SMC), outer panel.

Mitras spent £500,000 on automation. An overhead conveyor was installed to transport each component from the press to the paint plant, minimising human contact.

The process starts at the press where it is In-Mould Coated to prevent any “popping” occuring during the painting process. All painting is done on-site where the newly modified paint facility has been specifically designed to handle temperatures of up to 205°C mimicking.

Body-In-White conditions, allowing Mitras to supply parts to all stages of manufacture.

Mitras have several stringent statistical tests that selected parts must pass before reaching the customer. On site we have a temperature controlled CMM room to perform dimensional tests and X-Rite equipment to measure and score colour matching. The paint supply system has been designed specifically for Mitras. It has dedicated re-circulating pumps for each body colour incorporating a quick colour change manifold operated from a wall - mounted control panel within the paint booth.

Once painted, the spoiler is transferred to the bonding and final assembly area. Here, dedicated robotic bonding equipment ensures consistency and repeatability in the final process.

An unique 5-axis robot operated bonding cell was constructed for this project . It houses 6 components and produces 3 completed units every ten minutes.
